Accessibility Statement

Version 0.2Effective / last updated 2026-09-06

What changed: replaces 0.1 of 2026-09-02. What changed: the dark-theme contrast and Firefox focus-ring fixes are recorded; the legal drivers, including California's Unruh Act and the European Accessibility Act analysis, are stated; the overlay caution is added; a stale lawyer note is corrected.

DRAFT for attorney review. Not legal advice, and not a conformance claim.

Our aim

EdgeQuote aims to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. The estimator is used by homeowners who did not choose the tool and cannot go elsewhere for that contractor's price, so it has to work for everyone, including people using a keyboard only, a screen reader, magnification, or reduced motion.

We do not claim conformance. No independent audit has been carried out. This statement describes what has been tested, what has been fixed, and what is known to be wrong. That is more useful than a badge.

What has been addressed

  • Keyboard access to the estimator's question groups. Every radio group used to have zero tab stops whenever nothing was selected, which made an unanswered question unreachable by keyboard. Fixed and verified on a live estimator.
  • Focus on step change. Moving to the next question used to leave focus behind; focus now moves to the new step's heading, so a screen reader announces where you are.
  • Recoverable expired session. An expired form token used to produce a permanent "try again" with no way forward. It now recovers automatically and allows one retry.
  • Contrast. The faint text colour was raised to a measured 5.06:1, above the 4.5:1 threshold for normal text.
  • Small screens. The landing navigation no longer disappears below 480px.
  • Form labels. Lead contact inputs are properly labelled.
  • Language of the estimator. French estimators are served in French, including the error and helper text; five English strings that leaked into the French interface have been corrected.
  • Language of the dashboard. The contractor dashboard used to declare lang="en" for every contractor, so a screen reader pronounced a French interface with English phonetics (WCAG 2.2 SC 3.1.1). It now follows the signed-in contractor's own locale.
  • Dark theme contrast. The estimator's dark theme, used when a contractor's site is dark, had text and control colours below the AA threshold. They were raised to meet WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.3 and 1.4.11 and verified by measurement.
  • Visible focus in Firefox. Focus indicators relied on a browser default that Firefox did not draw on some controls; an explicit focus ring is now drawn everywhere (SC 2.4.7).
  • Legal pages. The documents under /legal are served as plain, semantic HTML with headings, a table of contents and no scripts, so they are readable with any assistive technology.

Known problems

  • No independent audit and no assistive-technology testing programme. Testing to date has been developer-led. No verified results exist for JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver.
  • No accessibility conformance report (VPAT or EN 301 549 statement) exists. If one is requested by a public-sector buyer, it cannot currently be provided.
  • The estimator embeds in third-party sites, and the host page's own accessibility is outside our control. A contractor with an inaccessible website can still present our estimator badly.

The law behind this statement, and which parts apply to us

  • United States — ADA Title III. Courts and the Department of Justice treat a business's public-facing website as a place of public accommodation in most circuits. The estimator is consumer-facing even though our customer is a business, so it is where the exposure lies. Section 508 applies only to federal procurement and does not apply to us.
  • California — Unruh Civil Rights Act (Civ. Code §51 et seq.). An ADA violation is automatically an Unruh violation, and Unruh adds statutory damages of at least USD 4,000 per occurrence plus attorneys' fees. That is why most US web-accessibility suits are filed in California, and why a Homeowner in California using an inaccessible estimator is the scenario this statement exists for.
  • European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882), in force for services since 28 June 2025. It applies to listed services offered to consumers, including e-commerce services. EdgeQuote sells to businesses; a Homeowner uses the estimator but buys nothing from us through it, so the estimator is not an e-commerce service in the Act's sense. Independently, the microenterprise exemption for service providers (fewer than 10 persons and turnover or balance sheet at or below EUR 2 million) applies to this business today. Our position is that the Act does not currently bind us; we aim for its underlying standard (EN 301 549, which incorporates WCAG 2.1 AA) anyway, because the estimator is used by the public. The lawyer should confirm.
  • United Kingdom. The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments, which for a website means a reasonably accessible one. Public-sector regulations do not apply to us.
  • France. The general accessibility duty (loi n° 2005-102, art. 47, and the RGAA) binds public bodies and, since 2025 under the EAA transposition, the services in scope; see the EAA point above.

Overlays

We do not use, and will not buy, an "accessibility overlay" widget. Overlay scripts do not make a site conform to WCAG, they interfere with users' own assistive technology, and sites using them are sued at the same rate as sites without them; several plaintiffs' complaints cite the overlay itself. The only defence is fixing the interface, which is what the list above records.

Feedback

If you cannot use part of EdgeQuote, tell us at sebastien@beyondtheedgestudio.com and describe what happened and what you were using. We aim to reply within 5 working days. If you are a homeowner and an estimator is unusable for you, contact the business directly as well, so that they can take your details another way and you are not left without a price.

NOTES FOR YOUR LAWYER

  1. This statement deliberately admits open gaps (no independent audit, no assistive-technology testing programme, no VPAT). That is the honest position and it is also the defensible one: a published statement that claims conformance the product does not have is itself a misrepresentation and, in the US, the kind of thing plaintiffs' firms quote back. Publishing a statement while the product is inaccessible would increase risk, not reduce it; every item under "What has been addressed" was verified on the live product before being written. Confirm the disclosure posture.
  2. European Accessibility Act. The statement takes the position that the Act does not bind EdgeQuote (not an e-commerce service to consumers; microenterprise exemption). Confirm both limbs. If either fails, an EN 301 549 accessibility statement in the prescribed form is required and this document is not it.
  3. Unruh. Confirm that the estimator embedded on a California contractor's website exposes us, and not only the contractor, to an Unruh claim, and whether the Terms' indemnity (Section 14) should be extended to accessibility claims arising from the contractor's host page.
  4. US exposure. ADA Title III website litigation targets consumer-facing interfaces. The estimator is consumer-facing even though the customer is a business. Confirm whether a formal remediation plan should be documented.
  5. The feedback mechanism commits to 5 working days. Confirm that is deliverable by a sole proprietor.

WHAT THIS DOES NOT COVER

  • Any conformance claim, any VPAT, and any EN 301 549 statement. None exists.
  • The accessibility of a contractor's own website hosting the embed.
  • Content a contractor writes, including their own question wording, which we do not review.
